LAGOS—Tragedy struck, , in Diamond Estate, Sango-Tedo area of Ibeju Lekki, Lagos State, after a female lawyer, Mrs Udeme Odibi, allegedly stabbed her husband to death in their apartment.
As at the time the corpse was found, the deceased’s manhood was severed and placed on his right hand and his stomach ripped open with the intestines spilling out.
Information at Vanguard’s disposal revealed that the couple got married three years ago but had no child. However, residents told Vanguard that the deceased could have had premonition of his death, as he had confided in his mother and some friends two days ago of threat to his life by his wife.
Mrs Odibi attempts suicide
Vanguard further gathered that there had been lingering quarrel over property between the couple until the unexpected happened yesterday. It was also gathered that before the arrival of the Police, Mrs Odibi ( 47) attempted to commit suicide by stabbing herself with the weapon she allegedly used on her late husband, Mr Otike Odibi (50).
At press time, she was still receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital where she was rushed to by policemen attached to Ogombo division.
A neighbour revealed: “The deceased was an easy going person. He was also a lawyer. They were married three years ago, after Otike divorced his first wife. The union with his first wife produced a daughter, who is studying in the United Kingdom, but the current marriage is said to be without a child.”
Genesis of crisis
Another resident stated that trouble started after the suspect told the deceased to will his property to her since she was the legal wife currently living with him.
The demand, according to him, did not go down well with Otike who was said to have insisted on giving his children a larger share of his property and his wife the least.
The resident added that the couple had accused themselves of infidelity, an issue that usually led to verbal confrontation until Wednesday night when it degenerated into a fight.
According to him, “ at about 10 pm yesterday, (Wednesday) the couple were engaged in a quarrel over the property. Otike called some of his relatives and a resident in the estate to inform that his wife was with a knife and had threatened to kill him if he did not will all his property to her.
“Had the friend he called known, he would have contacted the Police. But he thought it was the usual quarrel. He only advised them to settle the matter amicably.
“This morning( yesterday) he dialled Otike’s phone without response. Out of curiosity, he went to check on him only to find him in the pool of his blood dead on the bed.”
Confirming the incident, spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Chike Oti, said: “The Divisional Police Officer, Ogombo, Ajah, Lagos, received a distress call at about 0730hrs, that one Mr. Otike Odibi was allegedly killed in his home at Diamond Estate, Sango-Tedo Lagos, by his wife, one Mrs Udeme Odibi.
“Based on the information, the DPO mobilised a team of detectives to the scene where they found the man lying on the bed in the pool of his own blood, dead.
“Before the arrival of the Police, Mrs Udeme, who had unsuccessfully attempted to commit suicide after allegedly killing her husband, was rushed to the hospital for treatment by neighbours.”
Sequel to the above, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Edgal Imohimi, directed Crime Scene Detectives from the homicide section of the SCID Panti Yaba and Forensic experts to the scene to aid in the investigation.
