Late Dora Akunyili’s daughter, Njideka Akunyili Crosby is among the 24 winners of the 2017 MacArthur “Genius” grant. This grant is typically awarded to talented American artists, writers , painters and scientists.
Njideka Akunyili has been making waves in the art world abroad. She is based in Los Angeles and dozens of wealthy collectors queue to buy her latest works.
She opened her first European solo show at the Victoria Miro Gallery in London on October 4th 2016. She works mostly on paper, creating large-scale interiors that combine serene human figures with dense areas of collage and image-transfer that subtly radiate her Nigerian heritage.
Njideka Akunyili Crosby who was born in Enugu state expressed that she draws experiences from her life as a Nigerian woman who lives and works in California, United States.
According to the MacArthur foundation, Njideka Akunyili Crosby is “a figurative painter whose works express the hybridity characteristic of transnational experience through choices of subject matter, materials and techniques.” The foundation which is also referred to as the “Genius” fellowship, will award $625,000 (N228,000,000) each to Njideka and the other winners.
