An highly intelligent and brilliant woman who through her works both as an highly successful entrepreneur, motivational speaker and an author has been an inspiration to many young women both home and abroad. Her wealth of experience and expertise has opened for her the door of opportunity to serve as a mentor and role Model to many young Nigerians.
Born as the third child of seven children in Ibadan, Oyo State. Ibukun completed her primary and secondary school education at St. Pauls African Church Primary School, Lagos and Methodist Girls’ High School, Yaba respectively before she proceeded to the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) where she graduated with a B.Sc in Chemistry.She furthered her education and study upon which she holds post graduate and MBA certificates as a result of her completion of several business programmes at the Lagos Business School and IESE Business School.
While on her compulsory one-year National Youth Service Corps service, She worked as an audit trainee at Akintola Williams & Co (now Deloitte). She began to develop a strong passion for architecture, furniture , space design before she left for Alibert Nigeria Ltd. as showroom manager.
The entrepreneurship spirit in her drove her quest to be independent which led her to established a furniture manufacturing company called Quebees Limited in 1989. After a short while the Quebees Limited evolved into The Chair Centre Limited and later into SOKOA Chair Centre Limited following a venture merge with SOKOA S.A and Guaranty Trust Bank in 2004.
Ibukun who many refer as a business magnate has been seen to be very productive in many fields. She is a fellow of the African Leadership Initiative and Aspen Global Leadership Network. She is is also a member of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, member of the board of Nigerian Sovereign Wealth Fund and Chairman, Board of Trustees of Women in Management, Business and Public Service. In 2011, she co-founded the Afterschool Graduate Development Centre, a career centre established in order to checkmate the high rate of unemployment in Nigeria.
An entrepreneur par excellence, Ibukun Awosika’s feats are not commonplace. With business interests in manufacturing, retail and bank-way security systems services, Awosika, is without doubt a heavyweight in her field. Ibukun who has been seen to also be an excellent and sound motivational speaker in the business world dedicates her time to building an army of strong-minded moguls. As such, she is a regular speaker at forums including the After School Graduate Development Centre, where youth employability and enterprise issues in Nigeria are addressed.
As a result of her immeasurable and immense contribution to the business world , Ibukun Awosika became the first woman to be appointed Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria on September 7, 2015. following the resignation of Prince Ajibola Afonja.
She has also emerged has a media Personality whose passion has led her to inspire and speak to young people by all means avaliable. In 2008, Ibukun was among five Nigerian entrepreneurs who appeared in the first African version of the Dragon’s Den. She also hosts a T.V programme called Business His Way. She has also authored two best sellers titled “The ‘Girl’ Entrepreneurs” and “Business His Way”.
Her list of Awards can never be underestimated as she has bagged quite a number of Awards either as a result of her contribution to the Business world or as a result of her wonderful and charitable personality. She won the FATE Foundation Awards as the FATE Model Entrepreneur Award of The Year in 2006. She won the
International Women Society Award for the Golden Heart Award in 2007. She also won the International Women Entrepreneurial Challenge Award in 2008. She was also nominated as the YNaija Person of The Year in 2015.
