Some people walk the face of the earth with just one mandate, creating and establishing a land mark. One of such people is veteran actress Bukky Ajayi, who among other things, became a pace setter in the Nigerian Movie Industry. A woman of a dynamic and excellent personality, a plethora of intelligence, and a woman with undying love for all around her.
The iconic actress at very young age developed a strong interest in theatre, which was greatly engendered when her father who took her to the cinemas as a young girl. Her interest for acting was so much that she used to do a cardboard sort of cinema for children, and charge half a penny to come and watch.
Mrs Bukky Ajayi was on scholarship in London from the Federal government for six years after which she started working in Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) as a presentation assistant in 1966. Her love for the Nigerian value and cultural system influenced her into presenting a couple of children’s programs and Nigerian’s Sketches, a program which talked about the Nigerian culture.
She got her first role was in the movie “Village Headmaster” in the 70’s, after which she got a role in Amaka Igwe’s “Checkmate”. The veteran actress personally stated that the shooting of international movie, “Critical Assignment” in South Africa, was one of the events of her life that she would never forget. Among many other movies, her feature in movies such as Mother of George, Indecent Girl, Diamond Ring, Witches and Thunderbolt translated to the fact that she wasn’t just in the movie industry for entertainment but for engrafting a message of value, virtue and wisdom to the people.
Veteran actress Bukky Ajayi, did not just live for herself, but for people around her. She gave her time, belongings and energy. She was a mentor to many who are now major actors in the Nigerian movie industry. In an interview with the national president, Actor Guild of Nigeria, Emeka Ike stated “ Bukky Ajayi is my mother , veteran actress , hero and role Model”.
On Saturday, March 5, 2016 at the fourth edition of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, it became an emotional scene as the veteran actress received an Industry Merit Award. A standing ovation greeted the announcement of the 82-year-old actress, who was wheeled to the stage to receive her award which was to be her last public outing.
With this blazing trails, we can confidently say the Veteran Actress, Bukky Ajayi Came, Saw and Conquered. She will forever remain on the heart on many. We will not forget you, we will not dishonor you, we will remember and be glad that you lived among us, that you taught us, and that you loved us all.
