The biggest risk any couple can take today is the lack of understanding that marriage is a shared responsibility and not a task for one alone. A couple who is not prepared to make sacrifices to salvage their marriage simply had no plan or purpose for the marriage from inception. It takes effort to create a real sense of partnership and a commitment in marriage; it is only when the two are resolute that they can get through life’s challenging threats to their marriage.
I had a very inciting conversation with an ardent reader last week which demanded that I share this pandemic destroying many marriages today. Having read the articles on ‘Renewing your vows,’ he felt that I was being fanatical and unrealistic because most Nigerian men are too conceited to admit their marriage is failing, let alone restore and renew their vows. In short, in his own situation, the task is for his wife to ensure the marriage succeeds for the sake of their young children; after all he is the man!
Mediocrity of the mind
One of the most common challenges in many struggling marriages in our society today is that couples become content with the situation they find themselves and gradually settle for mediocrity in their marriages.
Just as my friend rightly mentioned, the children become more important than the marriage through which they were conceived and the only basis to stay in a failed marriage is only in their interest.
Excuses and the blame game become the order of the day when you or your spouse has the mediocrity of the mind when you can no longer believe that marriage is a life changing experience and not a burden assigned to one person alone. It will certainly require the loss of negative mindset and a shift to make it work.
Just a little shift
Many couples struggle to keep up with the changes and demand their marriages have imposed on them through the journey while others commit their time to ensuring that their marriages succeed by learning how to control the threats.
The truth is, you can barely find a couple who are compatible in their marriage, those who you think look like perfect couples have only learned to manage their own problems and discovered ways to work through their daily difficulties.
It will amaze you to note that all that it requires many times is having the right mindset and understanding the reason why you married in the first place.
It is as simply as shifting a little so that the next person can be comfortable on the ride too.
