How Gov. Obiano’s Wife Lavished Xmas Gifts On Prison Inmates

For the prisons inmates across parts of Anambra State, they indeed knew it was Christmas as the wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Chief (Mrs) Ebelechukwu Obiano marked the festive period with them sharing assorted gift items to make them have a feel of the season.

The visit too her to Onitsha Prison in Onitsha South Local Government Area (LGA), Nnewi Medium Security Prison in Nnewi in Nnewi North LGA, Ekwulobia in Aguata LGA and Amawbia in Awka South LGA.

During the visits, the governor’s wife who is the Focal person of Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ) donated bags of rice, beans, and floor, cartons of malt drink, and Tropicana, gallons of vegetable oil, bagful of pairs of slippers, as well as tubers of yam.

Chief (Mrs) Obiano who spoke while presenting the gift items stated that her visit was to share the grat moment of Christmas festive period with the inmates to give them a sense of belonging.

While commending the prisons authorities for maintaining a clean environment, Chief (Mrs) Obiano promised to fix the non-functional borehole at the Ekwulobia Prison and assured of her willingness to facilitate the cause and interest of prisons authorities whenever they bring their formal request to her attention.

In appreciation, DCP Alex Oditah of Onitsha Prison, Aghedo Gabby of Nnewi Prison, Augustine Njoku of Ekwulobia Prison and Chinedu Andrew of Amawbia Prison thanked the governor’s wife for her kind gesture towards the upkeep and maintenance of inmates in particular and pledged continued support to Chief Willie Obiano administration and CAFE.

Specifically, DCP Aghedo whose view reflected that of other prisons authorities across the State disclosed that Chief (Mrs) Obiano is the first wife of a governor since the creation of the State to visit the 178 capacity Nnewi Prison which was commissioned in June 2014 by governor Willie Obiano who equally provided it with two new vehicles while commending the Catholic and Anglican Churches for sustaining the prisons over the years.

However, they complained that the strike by Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Anambra State chapter has contributed to the overpopulated cells beyond their capacities by inmates awaiting trials pointing out that end to strike would ensure resumption of courts to trial the cases of inmates in the prisons.

The governor’s wife was accompanied by the wife of the National Chairman of the Al Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Mrs Mary Oye, leader of the Legislators’ Wives Association (LEWA) and wife of the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mrs Sylvia Oseke and APGA State Women Leader, Mrs Chinyere Ibenta, among others.
