Her grandfather, Alhaji Muhammadu Ribadu, served as the first minister of Nigeria’s Defence. Of her parents, she is the third child with two senior brothers and six younger ones. Her father was a civil engineer and her mother is a descendant of the wealthy & successful Ankali family.

Before marriage, she was educated at the primary and secondary level. She was also accepted into University to study Mass Communication but declined so that she could become a housewife to her husband. A Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU).

A Master’s degree in International Affairs and Strategic Studies from the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna.

A Diploma in Beauty Therapy. Her specialty lies in Mesotherapy, Micro-dermabrasion, and Permanent Make-up, with qualifications from the Carlton Institute of Beauty Therapy, Windsor, United Kingdom.

A Post-graduate diploma in cosmetology and beauty from Academy Esthetique Beauty Institute of France.

She also authored a book titled “Essentials of a Beauty Therapy: A Complete Guide for Beauty Specialists”.

Career and involvements

Before pursuing her tertiary levels of education, Mrs. Buhari ventured into business. She became a certified cosmetologist and beauty therapist who founded the Hanzy Spa and was the head mistress of Hanzy Beauty Institute. She was also able to achieve alot. Some of which include but not limited to the following

a. Source of information and resources concerning Beauty therapy and cosmetology for the National Basic Technical Education (NBTE).

b. Contributor and participant in the development of the syllabus for Small and Medium Enterprises for NBTE.

c. Active Member of the International Health and Beauty Council and United Kingdom Vocational Training and Charitable Trust.

Following the victorious win of her husband as president of Nigeria, she has played some very important role in politics.

a. She met with some mothers of the Chibok Girls who were abducted to express her feelings of sympathy on the 12th of July, 2015.

b. She participated in the Global Women Conference that was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. There she expressed the need for Nigerian laws that will prevent forced early marriages. She also spoke on the concerns of sexual abuse of children in Nigeria, human trafficking and the need for its ratification.

Besides her political involvement along side her husband, she is a loving wife and devoted mother to five disciplined children: Aisha, Amina, Halima, Yusuf, and Zarah. She is also a loving grandmother.
